Birds being sold included nine species
listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List, as well as eight species that are
Near Threatened, study found.
The red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus), a popular
entry in singing competitions, was one of the most commonly-sold birds.
Several owls were also on sale, according to the
study, their high demand likely fueled by the Harry Potter films.
