US Secretary of States charges Nigerian government on good governance to check terrorism

The US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on governments in Nigeria to strive harder to deliver on their campaign promises , as well as create opportunities that enhance the welfare being of Nigerians and give them sense of belonging.

That the diplomat said would discourage people from patronising violent extremism and subsequently bring down the wave of bombings by the boko haram Islamist.

John Kerry gave the remarks on Community Building and Countering Violent Extremism in a session in Sokoto State, being part of his working visit in Nigeria.

" To win the struggle for the future, nations need to do more than just denounce bankrupt, dead-end ideologies that the terrorists support. They also have to offer their citizens an alternative that is better, that offers hope, that actually delivers on its promises", he told the high profile audience that made up of the Governor Tambuwal , the Sultan and others.

He said the boko haram sect has caused so much destruction and deaths in Nigeria , that should not be overlooked but work harder to curtail it.

"As everyone in this room well knows, in its quest to destroy knowledge, the terrorist group Boko Haram has killed more than 20,000 people, displaced more than 2 million, and flung some 7 million Nigerians into hunger, thirst, and desperate need. On Sunday, they descended into a small village near Chibok in the middle of the night, looting every home that they saw, and then they took food and livestock before burning those huts to the ground. They killed 10 people that night and abducted 13 others – women and children – adding to the thousands of other victims, including the hundreds of girls, of Chibok girls who were abducted more than two years ago".
