Today’s tree planting campaign of
the Lagos State government is taking place simultaneously in all the 20 local
government Areas of the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State
Ministry of Environment Mr Hakeem Ogunbambi , announced this in an event that
heralded the annual ritual.
Ogunbambi said the essence of the tree
planting campaign which began in 2008 was to complement the landscaping and
beautification programme of the state, also part of initiatives to reduce
excess atmospheric carbon dioxide since trees absorb it.
``The programme is also created to
respond to the effects of the adverse weather conditions,” he said.
The permanent secretary said that
since the inception of the programme, there had been increase in notable
organisations participating in the exercise.
“Lagosians had shown tremendous
support for the initiative and should be
commended for their effort,”.
