Dr. Liman made the call in message to a media workshop aimed at building the capacity of journalists towards effective communications and agenda setting for enhancing resilience to climate change in Lagos.

Dr. Liman said the rising sea level all over the world has a lot of adverse effects on the people , their econmy and health, which should not by overlooked.

While noting that Nigeria in particular has  in the past faced serious flood disasters even as reports predicts worst disasters, the FRCN DG said the exploitation of raw materials including sand mining from water bodies, exposes the country to many flood cases with attendant devastating consequences, such as contamination of water sources, loss of homes, extinction of wild lives and waste of huge revenue in combating  disasters.

Dr. Liman who was represented by the Director of National Broadcast Academy, said the only way to protect the country, especially coastal cities which are more at risk of the  inpending doom, was to act now.

“When we sea level rises, it has devastating effects on the habitat. It causes the contamination of drinking water, threaten wild lives and put economy under serious strain. We must act fast and the way to begin is for the media to increase their reportage on climate change impacts in a way that attract the attention of policy makers”, he said.

In a presentation on "the Coastal Cities at Risk", being a recent research finding, Dr. Ibidun Adelekan, the Leader of the research team in Lagos, said Lagos has been included among 10 countries in the world that are at risk of flooding.
