Obiano installs monarch despite protests

Barely 24 hours after Oraukwu community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State protested against the candidature of Dr. Emeka Onuorah as the monarch of the area, the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano yesterday installed him as the traditional ruler of the town.

Willie Obiano
Onuorah was issued with a certificate of recognition by the governor at his official residence during a brief ceremony that took many people by surprise.

During a protest by people from the community on Wednesday, it was alleged that some money bags in the area were bent on thwarting the wishes of the people, as they claimed that government was insisting on giving the stool to the highest bidder.

Acting President-General of the community, Chief Harold Mbanusi, insisted yesterday that the community would not recognize Onuorah as its monarch, adding that those behind yesterday’s installation had murdered peace in the community.

It has been reported that  Onuorah polled 15 votes to come third, while Chief Pius Okoye scored 535 votes and Vincent Okechukwu scored 20 in an election conducted for them by the community in December last year.

Okoye had also been presented to officials of Idemili South local government area as required by law before yesterday’s twist.
