Since last Wednesday’s demise of Nigeria’s Former Foreign Affairs
Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, the atmosphere in Abia State where the late Politician
comes from has become even more intense.
In Arochukwu Kingdom, which is the closest neighbour of Ohafia LGA,
Chief Maduekwe’s town, the unfortunate incident has dominated discussions among
different categories of persons, with prominent indigenes describing his death
as the exit of an influential politician from Abia State.
To a foremost figure of Nzuko Aro, Nwamazi Eugene Onyeike, the Late
ex-minister was very visible in the country’s political sphere having held
many top positions.
While wishing the fallen politician well in the bosom of the Lord,
Nwamazi Onyeike said Arochukwu people
would particularly miss him for impacting positively on the the lives of younger politicians from the community.
“He was an influential political figure in the State. Some of us
feel that he is the only qualified technocrat in Abia state. Chief Ojo loved
Aro people; no wonder he supported our proud son Chief Mao Ohuabunwa in the
senate. Also our own Anicho Okoro was one time his Personal Assistant. As I
pray for him to be accepted by His creator, i commiserate with those that he
left behind”.
Similarly, another prominent Son of the Kingdom, Prince Kenneth
John described Chief Maduekwe’s death as the loss of a real Politician.
“Actually his death is a
big loss to Ohafia people, and a colossal loss to Abia North. Abia State
has lost a real politician. Hon. Ojo Mmaduekwe was a big politician both
during the military and democratic regimes”.
Prince John however regretted that the people of Abia North did
not really derive maximum benefit from Chief Maduekwe’s towering political influence in the country.
“We the people of Abia North Zone did not benefited a little from
his political endeavours. Lately,It was as if he never existed in Abia North.
However,
he has paid his dues, may his soul rest in peace, amen.”
Ngwu with Late Maduekwe |
In his tribute to the fallen icon titled (He came, served and Gone), Ngwu wrote, “at a point I began to wonder if he is the only qualified bureaucrat or technocrat in Abia. My last time with him was on the 6th of February 2016 at a Political Stakeholders meeting in Abuja.
Chief Maduekwe said then , "I have so much respect for Dr. Alex Otti. For a man who has never been in politics to come this far in Abia state, it's commendable and should be involved in the governance of the state. Even in my Constituency, his party APGA produced my representative right before me".
Ngwu
also spoke of his encounter with Chief Maduekwe; " he told me, you are
one young man that I admire his interest not only in politics but in
alleviating the sufferings of the people”.
