With the increasing rate of hearing
disorders in the society, it will benefit the country to start screening the
ears of newborns.
This will enable the early detection
and treatment of any ear problem , thus
ensuring that children do not grow with the disorder.
This was the advice of a Professor
of Speech and Hearing Rehabilitation, Julius Ademokoya.
Professor Ademokoya said while there
is emphasis on universal newborn hearing screening and management in the
developed world, it is not the case in Africa.
“Many children in Africa continue to suffer
undetected and un-managed hearing and speech disorders. At any time later, when
their disorders are diagnosed, particularly after their second birthdays,
therapeutic interventions are likely to yield less result than if administered
earlier".
He said "the advocacy to government is to establish screening centres
with intervention included in the National Health Insurance Scheme".
