The entire annual budget of Lagos State will not be enough
to clear drainage channels in the state of filth.
The State Commissioner for Environment , Dr. Babatunde
Adejare said this at a media workshop at the National Broadcast Academy, Ikeja.
He explained that in cognition of enormous economic loss
due to the blocking of drainage canals, made the state to be proactive in
putting up measures to check flooding.
Adejare said every season, the state has three levels of preparation
against flooding, such as pre-rain preparation, during rain preparation and
post preparation.
He said the increase in mining of sand has caused the
state much loss as they contributed to the recurrent overflowing of the ocean,
the latest being the ocean surge in Oke Afa in which flood covered over 200
kilometres of land in space of hours.
The Commissioner also commented on the state’s annual
tree planting campaign which was performed today, and saw the planting of over
6000 trees.
According to him, with the vigour put in the planting
trees campaign which started in 2008, the target of planting 10,000,000 trees
by 2020 would be achieved.
