A new report has included Lagos as among 10 cities with the highest risk of flood disasters.
The report which followed a research known as " Coastal Cities at Risk" also billed Lagos to even be more at risk as it would be among 5 cities vulnerable to flooding by 2030.
The leader of the research team in Lagos, Dr. Ibidun Adelekan, said in a speech that sea level has risen by 63.6 mm over 20 years, and that the implication of that is that more communities in Lagos would be taken over by flood, with attendant adverse effects including, mass loss homes, huge economic loss and escalation of diseases.
Meanwhile an online publication by an organization known as, Live Science, included Abidjan , the capital of Ivory Coast as only African country in the list of 20 cities most vulnerable to flooding.

The research which involved the
compilation of data in 136 coastal cities with more than 1 million residents
and types of flood protection they had,
underlined China, India, Ecuador, Japan, Thailand and New York as cities mostly
at risk of flooding.
Specifically, the most vulnerable
city was Guangzhou, China, followed by Mumbai and Kolkata in India, Guayaquil,
Ecuador and Shenzen, China .
The researchers combined data with
forecasts of sea level rise, ground sinking due to groundwater depletion, as
well as population growth projections and economic forecasts of gross domestic
product (GDP).
In both their best- and worst-case
projections of sea level rise, the yearly global cost reached higher than $1
trillion.
Almost all cities at the highest risk of
flooding damage were in North America or Asia.
Here are the top 20 most vulnerable
cities:
1. Guangzhou, China
2. Mumbai, India
3. Kolkata, India
4. Guayaquil, Ecuador
5. Shenzen, China
6. Miami, Fla.
7. Tianjin, China
8. New York, N.Y.—Newark, N.J.
